Hi! My name is J Oien (they/them) and I'm a Certified Personal Trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM). I am also a Registered Nurse, with a background in public/community health and sexual/reproductive health, which mainly comes through in the way that I value shared decision-making, education, consent, and client-centered care. I'm based in Williamsburg, Massachusetts, where I live with my partner, Olivia, and our two precious cats, Harvey and George.
Though I was very involved in competitive marching band in high school, my fitness journey began in earnest in 2016 when I was in nursing school. During my first semester Health Promotion course, a professor challenged me and my fellow students to come up with a health goal - "You're going to be supporting folks through working on challenging health goals. You should know what that feels like, too." I decided to try out going to the gym three times a week - how hard could that be?
Turns out - it was hard! I used a "Seven-Minute Workout" template from the New York Times and got on a treadmill, or something, but it was incredibly boring and didn't feel like it was doing much for me (I didn't even know what I wanted it to do for me!) In the years since then, I trained for and ran a half-marathon, worked with a personal trainer to correct muscle imbalances that had contributed to running-related knee injury, CrossFitted, started on T, and most recently got into powerlifting at the Y - including competing in two competitions there! In late 2024, I had top surgery and got to learn first-hand about getting back into movement safely after a big surgical procedure. (As well as lifting the heaviest I ever have and loving my body more than ever.)
I've learned a lot on this journey, including about my own gender identity, how to relate and attune to my body, and the value of knowledgable, compassionate guides along the way. I also know how challenging it has been to find knowledgeable guides who understand my experiences, in spaces where I don’t feel judged. Thus Transformation Fitness WMA was born! I am very much looking forward to being able to share what I’ve learned with folks who seek to build connection with their body - especially women and folks in the LGBTQ+ / trans / genderqueer community - in a space that feels not only safe from judgment, but actively affirming.

Your goals are unique to you. My role is to help you set and achieve specific, measurable, attainable goals, which are more likely to be achieved than more abstract, generic goals - or someone else’s goals! Don’t know what your goals are? I can help with that, too!
Food does not have moral value. Counseling I offer around nutrition has to do with fueling your body to achieve your goals. I don’t believe in cutting out food groups or following unhealthy and unsustainable fads. Our bodies are incredibly capable of letting us know what they need - my role is to help you attune to that. (You’ll find that many of my guiding principles are aligned with the Health At Every Size, or HAES, movement)
Every body is a “gym body”. Pop culture has given us some pretty messed up ideas about what our bodies are “supposed to" look like. My job is to help you feel strong and capable in the body you’re in and have reasonable expectations about where we can get together - sometimes that includes bulking up, sometimes that includes slimming down, and sometimes it has nothing to do with outwards appearances at all!
Movement should be an opportunity to feel closer to your body - first and foremost. Learning how to attune to my body has been the most valuable part of my fitness journey. It is something I encourage my clients to prioritize and one of my guiding lights in training.
Movement should not feel like a struggle, and should not put you at risk for injury! Your training should be appropriate for where you are in your fitness journey - It should be suitably challenging to help you feel strong, accomplished, and motivated to keep coming back.

I’m here to support you in developing and achieving specific, measurable, attainable goals through evidence-based fitness and nutrition guidance - and through good old-fashioned fun!
My top priority is your safety and supporting you along your journey, which means I will give you feedback to keep you safe and help you grow. I am less “drill sergeant” and more “gentle encouragement”, but I will guide you to push yourself to do more than you think you are capable of - always within your comfort level and with your consent - with the same care and compassion that has been important on my own journey.
I offer training in both individual and group settings at two locations in the town of Williamsburg, Massachusetts, that allow us to have completely private sessions without anyone else in the space. I know prying eyes can be challenging in shared gym spaces, and value providing a space that provides safety from judgment for those who desire that. If you prefer to work out at home, we can do virtual training sessions oriented around the equipment you have available to you.
Training programs generally start with a posture and baseline strength/cardio assessments and orientation to body warm-up preparation for movement tailored to your movement patterns. From there, we move into a month-long focus on developing baseline stability for safe movement progression (think: high repetitions of slow, one-sided movements). In month two of most programs, we continue developing a foundation of whole-body strength with lower repetitions of increasing weight. Month three moves us into a more specific focus on your goals: bigger muscles, change in body composition, power/agility, etc.
If you want additional coaching beyond our training sessions, those service are also available and provided through weekly check-ins where we review your progress since last time and discuss how to address any challenges you faced.
Whether you have clear goals you’d like to achieve or are just trying on movement for the first time, I look forward to connecting over how to make movement a regular and valued part of your daily life.
