Frequently Asked Questions
The Essentials
-
Start wherever you are.
If you’re not sure which option is right for you, reach out. We can talk about your goals, your experience with exercise, and what kind of support you’re looking for, and figure out a good place to start.
You can jump into a group class if you’re familiar with basic strength training movement patterns, sign up for a beginner-friendly program, or work one-on-one through personal training or coaching. There’s no fitness test, no need to “get in shape first,” and no expectation that you already know what you’re doing.
New to strength training? You’re exactly who we’re here for.

TransFitWMA is a queer- and trans-affirming fitness space where you don’t have to be fit, confident, or know what you’re doing before you walk through the door.
We believe strength training should be accessible, sustainable, and actually enjoyable. We celebrate beginners, build modifications into everything we do, and focus on helping you understand and trust your body.
Whether you’re here to get stronger, feel better in your body, learn how to lift, or just find a place where you can show up as yourself, you’re welcome here. No gym intimidation. No judgment. No pretending that everyone’s body works the same way.
Get strong. Stay weird.
-
Yes - enthusiastically! Check out our Services page for more details on how that works. Instructions for accessing sliding scale pricing are written into the checkout instructions for every product.
-
Wear something you can comfortably move in and shoes that feel stable and supportive (think: keds, vans, converse - ideally not padded running shoes but you can wear those if they’re what you have!). You don't need special “gym clothes” or expensive equipment.
-
We recommend bringing your own water bottle and yoga mat, but otherwise we have everything you need here!

-
Nope. TransFitWMA is designed for people at all experience levels, including complete beginners. You don’t need to be strong, athletic, flexible, or confident in a gym to get started. We’ll meet you where you are and build from there.
-
Absolutely. Teaching people how to strength train is a big part of what we do. You’ll learn the basics in a supportive environment where questions are encouraged and modifications are normal.
-
Six-Week Programs: We start by reviewing/setting group norms and introducing ourselves, then introducing foundational practices like deep breathing, core engagement, and warming up.
HIIT Strength: We start class with introductions while we warm up so folks can get to know each other and feel a little more comfortable. We move pretty quickly into the workout and, while I offer form corrections and answer questions throughout the workout, it can feel overwhelming to folks who have no foundation of movement knowledge or are in a place where they are disengaged from their body - for this reason, I’d recommend these folks start in a Strength Training Foundations program to work on body awareness and gain confidence in basic movement patterns before joining the HIIT Strength classes.
Personal Training: Your first session is about getting oriented, not proving anything. We’ll talk about your goals, experience, preferences, and anything that affects how you move and train. Then we’ll start exploring exercises at an appropriate level, with modifications as needed.
-
Then this is a great place for you! There’s no need to know gym etiquette, understand every piece of equipment, or already feel comfortable lifting weights. We’ll teach you what you need to know.
Identity & Inclusion
-
Yes. TransFitWMA is a queer- and trans-centered and affirming training space in Williamsburg, Massachusetts. We welcome people of all gender identities and sexual orientations and work to create a space where people can show up fully as themselves.
This looks like:
admiring each others tattoos
copious drag race references
sharing about our unique hobbies and special interests
working out to Muna, Dolly Parton, Robyn, etc.
closing out classes with talking about what we’re proud of - workout-related or life-related
constantly learning more about what it means to each of our members to be queer- and trans-centered and incorporating those practices into our fabric
-
No! TransFitWMA is especially rooted in supporting queer and trans people, but everyone is welcome. Our goal is to create a welcoming, judgment-free fitness environment for people of all identities and backgrounds. Training spaces are scarce in the hilltowns, so this is also a community training space that happens to be queer- and trans-centered.
-
Yes. We don't use weight loss, body size, or appearance as measuring sticks. Members are encouraged to refrain from diet and weight loss talk.
Training is about getting into your body, working with your body to see what it can do, feeling how you want to feel, and seeking what you want to get out of movement.
-
Almost always! We can often adapt training to accommodate different bodies, abilities, energy levels, and health considerations. Modifications are a normal part of training at TransFitWMA. If you have a medical condition that affects exercise, we’ll do our best to engage in evidence-based practices to support your movement with that condition. Sometimes a referral to a physical therapist is helpful for understanding your specific needs, but I have a basic understanding of supporting folks with hypermobility and dysautonomic disorders. Please feel free to schedule a consultation to discuss your specific needs!

Strength training can help you build strength and confidence, improve your ability to handle everyday activities, support bone health, and develop sustainable movement habits. Training can also be adapted around different goals, experience levels, and abilities.
-
Yes. Beginners can start with simple movements and gradually build strength and skill. At TransFitWMA, exercises are scaled to the person doing them rather than expecting everyone to start at the same level.
-
Yes. TransFitWMA offers beginner-friendly powerlifting instruction focused on learning the major lifts, developing technique, and getting stronger in a supportive environment.
-
No. You can learn and train the squat, bench press, deadlift, and other strength movements without ever stepping on a competition platform.
Unfortunately for trans folks on hormones, our options are pretty limited as far as sanctioned competitions go, but there are local powerlifiting “party”-style events where we can gather together with folks from our geographical area to lift and have fun together. The International Association of Trans Bodybuilders and Powerlifters also has regional and national meets that are available to us.

There isn't one right answer. Some people benefit from weekly or twice-weekly in-person training, while others combine occasional personal training with independent or online workouts. We'll help you choose a schedule that fits your goals, time, and budget.
